Enterasys’ Legacy of Tough Switches

The network upgrade for the UNI department of residence will replace old Enterasys/Cabletron E5 modular chassis with new K-series K10 switches. We started installing the Cabletron equipment in the late ’90s and finished deployment in early 2001, after over 10 years of continuous operation we’ve certainly gotten a great return on our investment [ROI]. These devices have run like tanks. They’ve survived, for the most part, Iowa lightning storms, regular heat over 100F/38C, nearly 100% humidity, volatile campus power, burst steam pipes, leaky or burst pipes and have endured in unventilated closets. I can even say we had switches that survived a fire, but they were so badly smoke damaged and fouled with melted plastic they had to be replaced.

I can’t wait to see how the K10s hold up to our abuse.
